Anglo-Zulu Battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift

Anglo-Zulu Battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal, certain battle sites of the Anglo Boer War of 1899 to 1902.

In January of 1879 for various reasons, which will be explained in full on this tour, the British Army under the command of Lord Chelmsford invaded The Kingdom of Zululand from the British Colony of Natal in five columns. The largest of these was the number three column which crossed into Zululand on the 11th. January 1879 after the expiry of an ultimatum that was issued by the British Government to King Cetshwayo of the Zulus.

On the morning of 22nd January 1879, the Zulus attacked the British Army at Isandlwana inflicting the biggest defeat the British army had ever suffered at the hands of an indigenous army armed only with spears and cow hide shields. During the late afternoon of the same day the Zulus attacked the mission station at Rorke's Drift some 10 miles from Isandlwana and sustained their attack throughout the night eventually retiring during the early morning of 23rd. January. 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded during this battle - the most ever for a single action in British Military History.

You can still visit these battlefields and listen to the stories told of these very significant battles in South African history. I defy anyone to stand on the Battlefield of Isandlwana and look out across the 298 cairns of whitewashed stones marking the burial sites of the approximate 1300 British soldiers killed, it is estimated that about 3000 Zulu warriors were killed defending their land and not feel a lot of emotion. It is a wonderful story to listen to.

Should you wish to hear this story and visit the battlefields, I do organise and conduct 5-day tours to these two battles and include the Battle of Talana and Spionkop from the great South African War of 1899-1902 also known as the Boer War.
